Hi,
On my way home to VT from the NSS I stopped in NC to visit with Paul Fairfield (Wentworth GSPs).  We should all be in such great shape at the age of 94!  He is living at the Memory Center in Twin Lakes retirement community.  I didn't ask, but I think he and Eleanor moved from their retirement home into the center because she needed it before she died last year.  Paul stayed on there afterward.  He uses a walker with a seat, but otherwise seems fine.  I took Joni in with me, and when he saw us he was very excited to see a shorthair, and told all his friends that was the kind of dogs he raised.  He was part of a group that had just come out of morning chapel, and they then all sat in a circle (me included) to do limbering exercises.  Before they started, they asked me to do a little "show" demo, and then she was allowed to visit with all the residents in the circle.  She did very well, considering she isn't trained as a therapy dog.  Paul and I then spent about an hour chatting about the "old days" and who was still around, and all the time he just kept stroking and petting Joni.  It was sad to see how much he missed not having a GSP around anymore.
After the group broke up, we went to his room, which is very nice, as is the whole facility which is only 2 years old.  On the wall he has pictures of his deceased son, his other son & daughter-in-law, and the middle picture is of "Pearl Girl", who I believe was a daughter of Ben (Wentworth's Benchmark).  If my memory is right Ben was a DC, and solid liver at that. Getting a bench championship on a solid (no patches or ticking on feet or chest) was not easy in the 70's.
He was sad to see us leave, and said I had "made his day -- no, week, -- no month!"  If anyone is interested in sending him a card or letter, or even visiting if you are in the area, the address is Paul Fairfield, c/o Memory Center, 3801 Wade Coble Drive, Burlington, NC  27215

Pam,
So very glad that you were able to visit with Paul on your way home from the Nationals. I can only imagine how happy he was to see you and have a Shorthair spend some time with him. Wish that we might have been able to stop as well but I had to be back home to judge the DC Weimaraner Club's sweepstakes held with their own NSS and so time was not on our side. We do stay in touch with Paul and he is amazing. Losing El last year was just something that had to be unimaginably difficult but Paul is as stoic and brave as anyone I have ever known and so he continues on; albeit a bit more lonely. I am sure that Paul was thrilled to see you and how thoughtful of you to stop in to see him. What a kind gesture.

We have descendants of Benchmark who was a very handsome and talented dog in his own right. He never became a Dual though Paul & El had pursued it at one time.
They stopped by here for a few days after going to NY to get Ben back from a very notable and well known field handler in GSPs at the time. It cost them a great deal of money and more than a few tears to have him returned to good health as he had been chained to a barrel, was infested with parasites and was in generally poor condition overall. That pretty much ended their pursuit of a dual title as you might imagine because no title was worth the condition they had found their dog to be in upon their arrival at the handler's home .
It was just sad to see Ben in that condition but it was very good that Paul & El went for him when they did or the outcome might not have been positive.

"Pearl Girl" was a bitch bred by Donna Liberto ( Legacy GSPs) and she was out of Cynthia Weaver's Ch.Guten Morgen Frosch Von Grief and Donna's champion bitch, Frieda.
She was their last GSP and they adored her. In recent years they often spoke of Pearl Girl and her loss affected them deeply.
Pearl was the dog who came after Ben's untimely loss and I have no doubt she helped to heal their hearts in so many ways.

Thanks for sharing your visit with all of us and it is helpful to know that Paul is doing well. We owe him a call and you reminded me of it and so I am appreciative.

Sincerely,

Sharon

Sharon: thanks for the note about Paul and Pearl..I wanted to breed Frieda to Kermit, but I think you and Cynthia talked me into using her mother Molly instead. We did breed Frieda to your wonderful boy Ruger after that. Im so glad to her about Paul and Pearl. It makes me feel good to know she gave them some love and joy.  Donna

Yes Thank you so much Pam for sharing this with us as I too though paul  had passed away ……  I know my sister Denine will be so happy to hear this as well because she was like a daughter to Paul & Ell years agoJ

For those who may not know Denine showed Benchmark for them as he was a son of our foundation Dog Am/Can Ch.Fieldfines Count Rambard ..Benchmark was to my knowledge the first liver dog to ever receive a group placement and my sister was the one who was honored to finish and special this wonderful dog !

Donna thank you so much for having such a great memory as I was a little girl then and I do not remember much but I do have lots of photos ( Including that wonderful A Framed House)  J  Indeed how time flies……

Hi,
On my way home to VT from the NSS I stopped in NC to visit with Paul Fairfield (Wentworth GSPs).
