| Hi Martha:
Implemented on May 12, outside of AOM judges select dogs & bitches they feel are worthy of Grand Champion points. This title is in addition to the Champion award on your dog (when completed). Only Champions are eligible to compete for these points and must obtain 25 points with majors to get the title. This is not an additional class but an additional award available to exhibitors at the discretion of the judge.

Not sure on all the rules yet but Dixee received two this past weekend toward her Grand Championship. Both she and the other bitch Special received one. Robin said they have to win 3 majors and 25 points......number of class bitches and Special bitches beaten. I thought I read 15 points. Hopefully someone can clarify. Is it number of bitch Specials beaten or total number of bitches? Or is it whatever the points are in the bitch classes? It is only for Champions and you just enter as a Special.

I think you only get the points for how many bitch specials
you beat not the class ones??
The judges this weekend were confused. LOL

Brand new class for finished dogs, so that
you can keep competing and not necessarily as a special.

Everything
you ever wanted to know about this new class. The whether or not
the class dogs are counted depends on the circumstance if I remember right, but
if you follow the links it gives good examples. I actually like this
class as it gives me a reason to continue to show my girl even though I do not
want to special her.

To All Conformation Judges:
In accordance with the Rules Applying to Dog Shows the first Grand
Championship points will be awarded beginning on May 12, 2010. This program
comes at an opportune time as entries year to date have declined by over
30,000. For many owners there is little incentive to continue to exhibit dogs
that have completed their championship title. All exhibitors do not have the
financial means or desire to extensively campaign a dog in pursuit of top
rankings. In addition many exhibitors are restricted in the number of dogs they
can keep and this will allow them to show their dogs and continue to compete in
AKC events. This title permits up to four quality dogs to be recognized without
extensive travel as the Grand Champion title can be earned at all shows with
Best of Breed competition.
Grand Championships was enthusiastically endorsed by the Board of Directors and
then presented to and voted on favorably by the delegate body. Upon the
delegates approval Grand Champion became a part of the Rules Applying to Dog
Shows. Since all AKC judges are expected to judge in accordance with the
Rules Applying to Dog Shows the entire judging community will be an integral
part of this program's success and how well exhibitors receive this exciting
new title opportunity. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this
program do not hesitate to talk with a member of the Executive Field Staff or
contact me.
The documents listed below should provide clarity and understanding of the
Grand Championship program that is being implemented on May 12, 2010.
- AKC Grand Championship Program
provides an example of judging procedure.
- Explanation for Exhibitor &
Judges has more detail and is
exhibitor friendly.
- Grand Champion Judging Sequence is
available and formatted to print on index type card.

Bev,
Thanks for the attachments. The only thing that is confusing to me is that if you are select dog, as an example, and you beat six other dogs, does that count at the major, even though that is not a point schedule major?
