Okay, folks...so, he's gonna buy a dog from someone.  I would not want to sell him a puppy, but don't you think this is an opportunity to educate (for any breed) rather than to burn him to the ground and turn him away from purebred dogs forever ?

Maybe it is just 'cause the local mentality (and what seems like his too) defies responsible dog ownership, but it seems like the quickest way to reinforce the "4-lane/chain gang" idea..is to be snobby about it.

Have to sort of agree with Phyllis on this one.  I responded to this person and was very upfront with the dialog on the list and our concerns.  Maybe there were some extenuating circumstances???  Judge not lest you be judged seems to be a wiser way to proceed.  Will be interested to see if I hear back from this person?!?!?!?

Ruthie what people were talking about is the dog being chained up. Not chains on the fence. You should see my back yard. I have chain link fence all around the wood fence and a chain link gate next to my wood gate for added security. Soon we will have a 6 foot fence around the front and a locked 6 ft gate. Dont ever want to take the chance of them getting out of some idiot opening the gate. Keeps the kids in too!

I don't think anyone was trying to shame anyone into anything. Everybody has a right to sell or not to sell their pup to whom ever they choose. I think what Carol was saying is we don't know exactly what happened. The dialog was kinda vague....broken chain, could it have been a chain collar, breaking while out for a walk? Maybe the dog did live on a chain, but we don't know that. Maybe give someone a chance to explain, then educate.....kc

Julie, I know the Boxer's "chain" broke and he had a "tangle" with 4 lanes (I take it was a highway). If this person had contacted me I would have found out how the 'new' dog would be housed, given a indepth lesson on keeping dogs safe and said I didn't have any dogs available even if I did. I'm contacted all the time in this area for people wanting dogs of the breeds I have and also to give obedience and agility lessons. I do a lot of educating. I live in a rural farming community where dogs are livestock, pure and simple. All my DH's friends think I'm nuts....did you notice I said they were my DH's friends, not mine? Of course the hunters want to "borrow" my GSPs........fat chance! Does anyone know how to keep skunks off your property???? In the last month I've had 5 skunked dogs.......they roll in the spray. ruthie & The Peace Paddock Pack Q, Tzoom, Tucker, Breeze, Morgan, Millie, Seeker & Echo In Our memory: Rilla, Tart & Sinnamon at Peace Paddock Agility Lake City, FL > -----Original Message----- > From: lahrgsp@aol.com > Sent: Sat, 27 Feb 2010 16:11:23 EST > To: gsp-l@shorthairs.net > Subject: Re: [gsp-l] German Short Hairs > > > In a message dated 2/27/2010 1:07:03 P.M. The guy sounds pretty cavalier about the whole incident.

Uh, the idea of a dog on a chain doesn’t ring my bell…

We recently lost our boxer to a broken chain and a 4 lane. We are looking for GSHP's in a reasonable area. We live in Jackson,TN. Thank you.

Being from a somewhat rural agricultural area I would have also assumed the dog was tethered outside, but I sold a dog to a person in South America and the chain (show collar) broke while the dog was in care of his professional handler and the dog bolted into traffic and was killed. And that was a wonderful home, the owners were devastated. So it might warrant a few questions. And if it was in fact tethered outside it would be a good opportunity for some education.  Another point to consider, particularly if this was an email, is if the person had limited proficiency with English Language.

Our town finally, just this year, passed an ordinance against tethering dogs (not so much because they were worried about the dogs but because the data showed an increased number of bites from dogs on chains) It was a good alternative to breed specific law which was also considered. Of course that doesn't help the dogs outside of the city limits and I'm sure caused a huge number of dogs to be euth'd at the pound because the owners did not have or were not willing to spend money for fencing.

Thinking about it I also had a "chain break" (show collar) on a Wiem I was showing in group for an older couple.  The dog went bolting but was caught quickly. Turns out this couple had that collar for a few decades. Since then I've always used my own show equipment. I probably at some point used the words "her chain broke".

I'm sorry, you are not going to shame me into changing my answer. I'm the person who has two chains on my gate, not just one. My dogs and their welfare are first and foremost with me. And no one just can come on my property...you have to call ahead so I will have the locks unlocked on the gate.
