| What I find interesting is the impression that the current system is
somehow corrupt, flawed, slanted thus it needs to be changed before
the 2010 NSS. Does this mean "all of the judges" selected prior to
the 2010 Delegates meeting were somehow not qualified to judge and the
dogs they selected were "not the best examples of the breed" for each
of their respective wins?
Me thinks some that have voiced opinions need to stop and think for a
second if they, a friend or a family member was chosen to judge at an
NSS under this system...
...or if a dog they owned or bred was really not deserving of their
win under the judges selected by this current system...
Following is a list of Judges selected either by the delegate method
only or the one currently in place beginning with those who will be
judging in 2010 up through 2012
2012 - BOB - Suzanne Dillin, Karen Ashe - Futurity - Lucretia Coonrod,
Sweeps - Karen Nauer
2011 - BOB - Sue Clemons, Steve Keating - Futurity - Leita Estes,
Sweeps - Valerie Nunes-Attkinson
2010 - BOB - Michelle Billings, Christy Featherston - Futurity - Robin
Remondi - Sweeps - Tina Craig
Past NSS Judges
2009 - BOB - Michael Faulkner, Dana P. Cline - Futurity - Patty
Crowley, Sweeps - Char Rutar
2008 - BOB - Elizabeth Muthard, Betsy Yates - Futurity - Nancy
Campbell, Sweeps - Bruce Schultz
2007 - BOB - Ann Yuhasz, Rita Bell - Futurity - Keith Vooris, Sweeps -
Janet Chandler
2006 - BOB - James Reynolds, Virginia Lyne - Futurity - Margaret Serak
Wilson, Sweeps - Brenda Abraham
2005 - BOB - Ken Clemons, Charles Ruppert - Futurity - Sue Harrison,
Sweeps - Sue Clemons
2004 - BOB - Jim Burns, Marilyn Spacht - Futurity - Barb Booher,
Sweeps - Charlie Edwards
2003 - BOB - Jon Cole, Judith Goodin - Futurity - Sharon Dattilio,
Sweeps - Don Schwartz, VMD
2002 - BOB - Carl Leipman, Jean Fournier - Futurity - Bob Keegan,
Sweeps - Nancy Liebes
2001 - BOB - Asa Mays, DVM, Beth Speich - Futurity - Mary Finley,
Sweeps - Robert McKowan
2000 - BOB - Lawrence Stanbridge, Dr. RIchard Hilderman - Futurity -
Jodi Engel, PhD. - Sweeps - Harold Engel, DVM, PhD
In three circumstances the judging panels have been adjusted for
health reasons. In one circumstance it was done when it was
determined the individual didn't have the minimum requirements and in
2006 an impassioned plea was made during the Delegates meeting to
place Mrs. Billings name back into consideration for 2010 because due
to health reasons Mrs. Billings was unable to fulfill her assignment
to judge in 2007.
In 2008 because of a delayed mailing date for the Shorthair Journal
with the information like Sue I received a phone call about the
"deadline extension" to receive NSS judges nominations and was asked
to contact others that may not have internet access or belong to one
of the "many" gsp list to let them know. One might view that as an
attempt to get the word out and inform rather than exclude.

just a quick reminder that neither ann Yuhasz or Keith Vooris were nominated in this fashion. they replaced Michelle Billings and Dot Simberlund as they were not well enough to complete their assignments and were voted in by the NESSC
And you all might just notice that my name as well as Patty Crowly's is on that list. Also Suzanne Dillon and robin Remondi. Check your Journal for the new business minutes. Four of us are on this committee.

Also Patte, if you are in favor of the present selection process just say so and I will so note it. Several others think it is fine. But as you can see, many others are not pleased with it.

| Patte,
I see the elephant in the room. So now I have to say that it makes sense. All this bull is due to what was and what might be? Ridiculous.
Is the system in need of change, I say yes. Because I don't belong to a regional club does not mean I have no say. As a member in good standing, I deserve a vote. That is my opinion.
With this overview in writing, what I see is assumptions and bitterness from presumed outcomes. Ridiculous!
I thought this discussion was started to sincerely help the membership; why are there always ulterior motives? Is it me or do you feel that this is targeting a particular dog? It's just not right to mislead people with an altruistic intention!
Thanks for the overview. Seeing it in text makes things so clear. It is frustrating and annoying. What is it with people? Sadly, when the fog clears it never seems to be about the dogs... Thanks for letting me vent. Thanks for always having answers at your fingertips. When I grow up I want to be as organized as you.

Hi all
I think we are making a mountain out of a mole hill! It was brought up at the General Meeting that many members have no local club to join. This is part of what brought on the looking at the process. It was a valid point from the membership and it needs to be addressed.
I hate it when members of the list start taking things so personally and start bad mouthing ideas of others. If you don't agree with something come up with another solution you like better. This list as Arvind said should be to help the membership voice their ideas so we can all benefit. Lively discussions can get the juices flowing lets just not have it be acid.

I would like to clear the point of my intentions as to trying to devise a
new system. I first thought of this several years ago when I learned that
only 37 people had returned the ballots for the national judges. 37 people
were responsible for picking the judge. Now, I do know that if the
membership wants to have a say, they need to take responsibility for filling out
the form and returning it. So after thinking about if for a while, I
thought maybe it's because this all comes out around the holidays. People
are busy, there is actually a life other than dogs, and by the time they get
through it, the deadline has passed. The following May, I came up with the
ballot box at the Nationals. What better way to get a good response then
have it at the Nationals when people are thinking about judges and who they
would like. We got a tremendous response. The largest we have ever
had. However, this year I had to walk around handing out sheets to people
and asking them to complete it, put it in the envelope, and stick it in the
box.
I have no agenda other then trying to find some way, to get a bigger
response from the membership.

In three circumstances the judging panels have been adjusted
for health reasons. In one circumstance it was done when it
was determined the individual didn't have the minimum requirements
and in 2006 an impassioned plea was made during the Delegates
meeting to place Mrs. Billings name back into consideration for 2010
because due to health reasons Mrs. Billings was unable to fulfill
her assignment to judge in 2007.
In 2008 because of a delayed
mailing date for the Shorthair Journal with the information like Sue
I received a phone call about the "deadline extension" to receive
NSS judges nominations and was asked to contact others that may not
have internet access or belong to one of the "many" gsp list to let
them know. One might view that as an attempt to get the word
out and inform rather than exclude.

I would like to clear the point of my intentions as to trying to devise a new system. I first thought of this several years ago when I learned that only 37 people had returned the ballots for the national judges. 37 people were responsible for picking the judge. Now, I do know that if the membership wants to have a say, they need to take responsibility for filling out the form and returning it. So after thinking about if for a while, I thought maybe it's because this all comes out around the holidays. People are busy, there is actually a life other than dogs, and by the time they get through it, the deadline has passed. The following May, I came up with the ballot box at the Nationals. What better way to get a good response then have it at the Nationals when people are thinking about judges and who they would like. We got a tremendous response. The largest we have ever had. However, this
year I had to walk around handing out sheets to people and asking them to complete it, put it in the envelope, and stick it in the box.
I have no agenda other then trying to find some way, to get a bigger response from the membership.

What I find interesting is the impression that the current system is somehow corrupt, flawed, slanted thus it needs to be changed before the 2010 NSS. Does this mean "all of the judges" selected prior to the 2010 Delegates meeting were somehow not qualified to judge and the dogs they selected were "not the best examples of the breed" for each of their respective wins?
Me thinks
some that have voiced opinions need to stop and think for a second if they, a friend or a family member was chosen to judge at an NSS under this system...

Patty, Please forgive if my email came off as accusatory. I had an epiphany after reading Patte's email. I should have sent it privately, but to me that is why good intentions are polluted, to much is private.
I love the idea of having a ballot box at the Nationals. That is brilliant and allows people to be in the moment. As for me, it is put up or shut up. If you don't vote, don't complain. People have to be responsible for their actions. No matter what the changes it is still personal responsibility. If you need me to man the box and "get out the vote" consider this me volunteering to do so at the NSS.
Again, my email was not to offend and I do believe that there are many who genuinely have the breed and the membership in mind.
And for the record, I love predicting the end results of the NSS, but I love to predict horse races and American Idol results, but let's not cheapen the integrity of the judges who have yet to do their jobs.

Perhaps an option for voting is to use an online tool such as
SurveyMonkey. It's a free application where you can creatively design a
survey, send online reminders to those who haven't completed it and download
results, etc. I'm simplifying it as it has many more options. We use
it where I work for a variety of surveys and people really like it and we tend
to get a good response rate.
What we did at our local gsp club is give members an option for a
variety of matters - newsletter, club meeting notices, etc.- those with online
access versus those who want snail mail. Perhaps the parent club can
do something like that and offer a paper survey option for those without
email. I'm confident you'd get more than 37 responses with an online quick
point and click survey and still a solution for those without computer
access.
Just a thought and an option to explore if there is any interest.

the membership wants to have a say, they need to take responsibility for
filling out the form and returning it. So after thinking about if for a
while, I thought maybe it's because this all comes out around the
holidays. People are busy, there is actually a life other than dogs, and
by the time they get through it, the deadline has passed. The following
May, I came up with the ballot box at the Nationals. What better way to
get a good response then have it at the Nationals when people are thinking
about judges and who they would like. We got a tremendous
response. The largest we have ever had. However, this year I had
to walk around handing out sheets to people and asking them to complete it,
put it in the envelope, and stick it in the box.
I have no agenda other then trying to find some way, to get a bigger
response from the membership.

I believe what may be of concern for some ....is the
question: Can or Are our members as a whole making an informed
decision when they submit their choices. Interesting that only 37 members
submit a vote for the NSS Judges, yet nearly 50% of the membership votes in
the elections. Perhaps one reason is because they are armed with
information - like bios and letters mailed by candidates telling them who they
are and their experiance. We are asking our membership to make an informed
selection based on what? What does Sam Smith , new-member of the
GSPCA, recent Puppy Buyer of a potential show quality puppy that I
co-own and would like to take to the National, know about Michelle
Billings? Absolutly nothing..... So what will Sam do?
Ask me who would I suggest he vote for so our dog might do well? Someone
suggested that not only should everyone vote for the NSS Judge,,,,but we should
also be voting for the National Field Trial Judge. Personally...I prefer
leaving that decision in the hands of the people who know these judges, what
their experiance is and what kind of judge they are...in this case that is the
NFTEC. Do they network with people around the country...yes. Will
they all agree...No ..but in the end they find qualified individuals. That
is why they were elected to that committee.
I believe what many are asking for is that whoever is deciding on the judge
should be making an informed decision. When I went to my first National
many years ago I couldn't have told you anything about the judges. If
someone had said here is a list of 60 names - pick 5 who would I have
picked? Just because they meet the minimum qualifications doesn't mean
they are "really" qualified to judge our National. Unfortunatly we all
know too many that just don't get our Breed even after judging it for 30 years
and frankly...some don't like our Breed.
I would like to hear about the process that other large clubs use to select
their National Specialty Judges.

Patty, Please forgive if my email came off as accusatory. I
had an epiphany after reading Patte's email. I should have sent it privately,
but to me that is why good intentions are polluted, to much is
private.
I love the idea of having a ballot box at the Nationals. That
is brilliant and allows people to be in the moment. As for me, it is put up or
shut up. If you don't vote, don't complain. People have to be responsible for
their actions. No matter what the changes it is still personal responsibility.
If you need me to man the box and "get out the vote" consider this me
volunteering to do so at the NSS.
Again, my email was not to offend and
I do believe that there are many who genuinely have the breed and the
membership in mind.
And for the record, I love predicting the end
results of the NSS, but I love to predict horse races and American Idol
results, but let's not cheapen the integrity of the judges who have yet to do
their jobs.

What I find interesting is the impression that the current
system is somehow corrupt, flawed, slanted thus it needs to be
changed before the 2010 NSS. Does this mean "all of the
judges" selected prior to the 2010 Delegates meeting were somehow
not qualified to judge and the dogs they selected were "not the
best examples of the breed" for each of their respective
wins?
Me thinks some that have voiced opinions need to stop and think
for a second if they, a friend or a family member was chosen to
judge at an NSS under this system...
...or if a dog they
owned or bred was really not deserving of their win under the
judges selected by this current system...
Following is a list of
Judges selected either by the delegate method only or the one
currently in place beginning with those who will be judging in
2010 up through 2012
2012 - BOB - Suzanne Dillin, Karen Ashe -
Futurity - Lucretia Coonrod, Sweeps - Karen Nauer 2011 - BOB -
Sue Clemons, Steve Keating - Futurity - Leita Estes, Sweeps -
Valerie Nunes-Attkinson 2010 - BOB - Michelle Billings, Christy
Featherston - Futurity - Robin Remondi - Sweeps - Tina
Craig
Past NSS Judges 2009 - BOB - Michael Faulkner, Dana P. Cline
- Futurity - Patty Crowley, Sweeps - Char Rutar
2008 - BOB
- Elizabeth Muthard, Betsy Yates - Futurity - Nancy Campbell,
Sweeps - Bruce Schultz
2007 - BOB - Ann Yuhasz, Rita Bell - Futurity
- Keith Vooris, Sweeps - Janet Chandler
2006 - BOB - James
Reynolds, Virginia Lyne - Futurity - Margaret Serak Wilson, Sweeps
- Brenda Abraham
2005 - BOB - Ken Clemons, Charles Ruppert - Futurity
- Sue Harrison, Sweeps - Sue Clemons
2004 - BOB - Jim
Burns, Marilyn Spacht - Futurity - Barb Booher, Sweeps - Charlie

2003 - BOB - Jon Cole, Judith Goodin - Futurity - Sharon
Dattilio, Sweeps - Don Schwartz, VMD
2002 - BOB - Carl
Leipman, Jean Fournier - Futurity - Bob Keegan, Sweeps - Nancy
Liebes
2001 - BOB - Asa Mays, DVM, Beth Speich - Futurity - Mary
Finley, Sweeps - Robert McKowan
2000 - BOB - Lawrence
Stanbridge, Dr. RIchard Hilderman - Futurity - Jodi Engel, PhD. -
Sweeps - Harold Engel, DVM, PhD
In three circumstances the judging
panels have been adjusted for health reasons. In one
circumstance it was done when it was determined the individual
didn't have the minimum requirements and in 2006 an impassioned
plea was made during the Delegates meeting to place Mrs. Billings
name back into consideration for 2010 because due to health
reasons Mrs. Billings was unable to fulfill her assignment to
judge in 2007.
In 2008 because of a delayed mailing date for the
Shorthair Journal with the information like Sue I received a phone
call about the "deadline extension" to receive NSS judges
nominations and was asked to contact others that may not have
internet access or belong to one of the "many" gsp list to let
them know. One might view that as an attempt to get the word
out and inform rather than exclude.

Well I'm no webmaster, but there are ways of insuring that you only submit one vote on all these online polls. Surely there is a way to submit an online poll or survey. Maybe even an online vote. We are all much more prone these days to go online than to pick up pen and paper, find a stamp and actually get ballots into the mailbox. We are certainly able to go online with GSPCA and submit our money ;-).

Perhaps an option for voting is to use an online tool such as SurveyMonkey. It's a free application where you can creatively design a survey, send online reminders to those who haven't completed it and download results, etc. I'm simplifying it as it has many more options. We use it where I work for a variety of surveys and people really like it and we tend to get a good response rate.
What we did at our local gsp club is give members an option for a variety of matters - newsletter, club meeting notices, etc.- those with online access versus those who want snail mail. Perhaps the parent club can do something like that and offer a paper survey option for those without email. I'm confident you'd get more than 37 responses with an online quick point and click survey and still a solution for those without computer access.
Just a thought and an option to explore if there is any interest.

So I am
fairly new to the breed and have been following this discussion as I attended
my first National this year. I am not going to pretend to know all the
judges and who is good and who isn’t although I have my opinion about
some as I have now been showing in conformation for about 2 years. I
would love it if there was a way for us to get judges that would put the best
dog that day up and not the handler or breeder or whatever. That however
is not why I am posting. I wanted to comment on the concept of online
voting. There is a way to make sure everyone only gets one vote, but it
is not email or IP address. Many of us have multiple emails, one for
work, one for home, one for buying things online, etc. If you have a DSL
account you will have a primary or main address and then you will have some
number of sub accounts that you can setup. You may also have hotmail,
gmail, etc accounts. Cable works the same way. Same thing for IP
addresses. If you have more than one computer, you have multiple
addresses. That said, it is not hard to setup a database that will check
you are who you say you are and you are only voting once. You get people
to register with name, address, etc in much the same way your bank validates
you are the account holder, verify it against the membership list, then you get
to vote and the database will validate and track who has voted and can prevent
people from voting more than once. Depending on how picky you want to
get, there is even security software that takes it even further. The message
though is it is doable and it is not that hard.
My other
comment is about why people may not vote. In my case I did not feel
knowledgeable enough at first. Even now there a judges I am not familiar
with and as such I do not feel qualified to vote for or against them. I
am also not one to vote for someone because “my breeder” said that
I should. Whether I am voting for president or a judge for the NSS I feel
it is imperative that I understand who or what I am voting for. Otherwise
I will abstain from voting which is what I did when I first became a member of
the GSPCA 5 years ago when I got my first GSP. I am now becoming much
more familiar with the judges and people in the show world and I am now
comfortable expressing my opinion in a vote. That said it does take some
time to learn the judges and the world of dogs and for me it took several years
as I did not show consistently or outside of my general area at first. I am not
sure how you educate novice people on the judges because experience alone does
not make the judge. Would judges be willing to write a small essay about
why they want to judge our Nationals and why they think they are qualified? It
would be like the candidates for officer for our club writing emails to the
voters. I like hearing from the candidates. It helps me make up my
mind especially if I do not know the person personally.

Hello, All,
Again, IMHO, all members in good standing, by right of paying their dues and joining the GSPC of America, should be entitled to nominate and vote for all National judging assignments. The GSPCA voting members are adults... they are entitled to have their voices (votes) heard, whether or not more "experienced" people feel they are capable of making "informed decisions". They would not be REQUIRED to nominate or vote. They are free to make their own decisions, and are able to ask others they respect for info about the judges, if they want to. Those members who do not participate by nominating and voting for judges would not be represented, but that would be their prerogative, and ultimately their own responsibility, if they didn't like the ballot results.
Hey, I'm just one member with an opinion... so that's my 2 cents worth... good luck to those charged with figuring out changes to make to the current system!
