I highly recommend to all my puppy people and at work the new puppy people is a book called "Mother Knows Best" by Carol Lea Benjamin. Common sense puppy raising, based on how a mother dog corrects and teaches her brood. Easy reading/cute illustrations and time tested I beleive. It makes you understnd how dogs talk, act, etc. My favorite. I also like "How to raise a puppy you can live with" by Rutherford and Neil. Paperback and common sense again. Donna

| We are now on a subject that is near and dear to my heart. I've cringed when I've read the recommeded titles. From my memory of those books they have a serious flaw, very 'old school' basis on training. Yes, they sometimes got it 'right', but basically do not take into consideration the new research in how animals learn and use some forms of fear, force or intimidation in their training methods.
My recommendations are for basic training: Congratulations! It's a Dog by D. Caroline Coile, Ph.D; The Loved Dog by Tamar Geller; and The Dog Whisperer, A Compassionate, Nonviolent Approach to Dog Training by Paul Owens (This is NOT the 'dog whisperer' that is currently on TV). For understanding how animials precieve the world and learn, I recommend: Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin; Don't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor (this can even be used to train children and spouses); If a Dog's Prayers Were Answered...Bones Would Rain from the Sky by Suzanne Clothier; and The Other End of the Leash by Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D.
The last four are not books for the first time or maybe even second time puppy owner, but for anyone who really wants to understand the wondrous creatures that we share our lives with....especially our sensitive, intelligent and loving GSPs.
I'll get off my soapbox now......
