I tend to look at the long term implications of laws such as this, and it appears that much of the legislation that arises on spay and neuter programs will eventually lead to a government mandated extinction of the domestic dog and cat within the US, both pure-breds and mixed breeds. California is just the lastest arena for this debate on such a program. Look at the number of endangered species in the world, many of which got to their status because of human interference, whether by over-hunting, habitat clearing, or other means. Short sited individuals have always said "the ones that are left will produce more". If this was true, how would any species ever go extinct. The truth is, a mandatory spay/neuter program is no different than over-hunting a species to extinction, or driving a species to extinction by taking away it's habitat. All take overly large amounts of breeding stock out of a population, and no animal species, wild or domestic, can sustain itself without breeding. What we need to strive for is a "Save our Pets" national bill that prohibits comprehensive, mandatory spay and neuter laws for all domestic dogs and cats in the US. A law that protects our rights and our pets rights, but still allows for adoption agencies and animal control facilities to require adopted animals be spayed or neutered. It is up to us to make sure that future generations will be able to know the love that a pet can give.
