Yes, Joan, it is a terrible loss to the breed for sure when valuable and historic memorabelia is forever lost due to the passing of someone so well known within their breed. I know this hapened when Bob & Doris Arnold passed as there were literally boxes of photos, awards and numerous types of memorabelia that was just discarded. I didn't have the opportunity to go through these materials but there were just one or two people who did. I'm not really sure what happened to all of it but I do know for fact that the comment was made to me by someone who had access to it all that they "just didn't have any place to put it all". I am rather sure it was disposed of after this person went through it and kept what she wanted. Really sad.
As Doris's health had declined and she went into a long term care facility no direction was given as to how these items were to be treated or who should have them. Doris was in a somewhat catatonic state in those last years and there was no formal disposition of the GSP memorabelia so basically it was lost to the breed and all of us.
It might be something for all of us to think about and it would be wonderful if there were some place where it might have a permanent home for those who would have an interest in it.
Without family members who share the interest or have knowledge of its' importance, it just seems to never see daylight again and that's just sad.

Sharon,
Among the most Important things that all of us “in the fancy” must consider as we grow older, is the orderly passage of written (such as rare books) and artistic materials to some central source, such as a breed library, or breed historian.
I was aware of the total mess that occurred when Kitty Murphy, someone well known in Brittainys, died. Apparently she possessed many valuable books, art work and photographs, much of which was thrown out in the garbage by her biker, drunken son, who either did not know, or did not care about the value of what he tossed. That becomes a huge loss to a breed. Perhaps the Parent Club could set up a form for pre-donations of that type of material. Historical or rare material should never die with the owner. That makes it a double loss.
I remember Paul and Eleanor quite well, as we had something in common, solid liver GSPs, in the 1970s. I guess that makes me an old timer too.

[gsp-l] Paul & El
Donna,
Paul & El moved into a gated retirement community in Sanford, NC ( near Raleigh) for a period of several years. They then moved a bit further north within the state and began living in a community that had homes for folks that could still live without assistance and also another part of it that allowed people to then move on into assisted living as needed and finally a complete care facility.
El is older than Paul and the last I knew she wasn't doing so well and Paul wasn't able to care for her adequately due to his own health issues. My understanding was that they were in the facility that provides immediate care as El needed it. But............they were still both hanging in there. I used to hear from them pretty regularly but in recent years, not so much. Shame on me for not doing a better job at staying in touch with them.
We also have mutual GSP friends who visit them more frequently than we've been able to, so I will contact them and see if they know how they are doing.
Geesh, I can remember when we all looked up to the "older generation" for mentoring and guidance as well as friendship. Now WE are in that segment of the GSP community
I'm feeling older by the minute here !!!
Let's hope we do half the job that all of those wonderful GSP folks who preceeded us did in welcoming and educating the future guardians of our breed. They are all so very missed these days.
The true shame is that so many new people to the breed in these past 10-15 years never had the chance to meet and get to know all of them. They were a treasure.

Subject: Re: [gsp-l] Guess Who 2nd Photo
I think there are more than 3 of us..either they are embarresed to have been around this long LOL..or there is some gaps in the ole memory cells...i know i have lots of those. The senior moments are getting longer than moments lately. I can think of so many funny things that happened back then, and some wonderful people who are not around anymore...I would like to know what happened to the ones I know who are not deceased. It would be nice if we could share info. with each other on our fellow gsp folks. Does anyone know how Paul and Eleanor Fairfield are? They were lovely people ...moved south near Gene Ellis I believe. Ok fire up them brain cells...Donna
