If the dog was "white", the underlying skin would be white.  The underlying skin on this dogs chest  and other areas that you can see is dark.

The only way he'd "turn" yellow is if he laid in urine.  My white GSP loves the sun and never turned yellow.

So maybe this is a stupid question but would it not make perfect sense for the GSPCA put up the money to the AKC to have this investigated?

Use Cathy's link below, then click on Our Dogs and scroll down to "Maynard" This must be one of their stud dogs -- sure tells you where the yellow is coming from.

I can't tell where these folks are located, but it appears they are quite involved in Shorthairs -- they have AKC titles on some of their dogs, and NAVHDA on others -- an upcoming litter will be sired by a dog with a MH. So they aren't novices -- one might think that they didn't know how a yellow puppy got into this litter -- but they are also showing an adult yellow dog, so they have been producing this for some time????? Yikes!!!!

LOL you brought me back to my Catholic school days! Those Nuns were SCARY! Got hit with a ruler on my butt for not sitting in my chair!
And to stay on topic, to me the dog looks like a lab head with a gsp body.

I came on this forum because I found this thread in a search. Hopefully you all might be able to help me or I might be able to help you? I have located almost 10 of these dogs all over the US. All of these dogs look similar in color but their size varies due to different breedings. Is anyone familiar with "Gelber Brand"? Translated I believe it's yellow fire? I have not been able to get a confirmed picture describing a "Gelber Brand" dog though. Those of you quick to criticize ought to show some compassion, owners of these dogs are just as flabbergasted as you all and would like answers as well.

This topic started on what I believe was a different color than what you are discussing. It was refering to an all white, with very very pale lemonish looking highlights. But not in the described gelber brand muzzle and front legs, but rather on the ears and body. I believe the lack of available pictures is why everyone has confusion on this issue. I too would LOVE to find a picture that the early Germans classified as "Gelber Brand." Was it like a tri-color or something else? It is debated, and I certainly can not give you an answer. There are several color issues that have become hot topics recently, (dilutes, possible double dilute, lemon, silver, tri) and no one really has an answer, but many have very strong opinions.
I think we all wish there was a clear cut image and exact interpretation of the gelber brand. It was apparently rare before, and if we even understood the genetics of it, that would certainly help, but we do not. If were a true "tri-color" I would think it would show up like tri-color normally does in other breeds like the Brittany, and be less common but not nearly so rare as it is described. That said, labs through off colors of all sorts of strange varieties, and there is strong eveidence that they are particular mutations. And they are generally accepted as purebred, though not desirable, and certainly rather rare. But basically, I like everyone else, just don't know, but wish I could find out more. :)

I know a line that has produce several tri-color dogs, and if you would like to PM me I will talk with you about it privately. I personally have avoided these dogs for this unknown, but the breeder does have excellent performance dogs, and I would rather not be the one to drag them through any issues publically.

Here is a picture of a dog I know of in Texas.  I have tons of pictures of her.  Her mother had been DNA'd 6 generations back through AKC and the sire to this litter is from more German stock.  I personally know both the sire and dam of this dog and every time they've been breed togather they produced two of these pups.  None of the other dogs, across the US, I know of have similar breeding and yet they all show the exact same coat and toe nail characteristics.  All of these people have been acused of something shady but I know for a fact this female pup is of as pure blood as most any GSP out there.
