I got a question yesterday from someone about entries for the NSS, and I wasn't sure of the answer. She wants to enter a dog in both Veterans and BOB. I looked at the rule book and it says that if a dog is defeated in any regular class, it can't go in for BOB. Since Veterans is a non-regular class, I would think it can go in for BOB even if it does not win the Veterans class.

Am I right?

As best I know it, no. If he is defeated in Veterans he cannot go on to BOB.

An additional note. He can compete in the Veteran Sweeps and be entered in BOB.

I checked with a friend who has been showing since we were all in diapers.  She said she didn't think it was OK but to check with AKC since entries don't close for 2 weeks.

Regarding defeated dogs:

AKC Rules & Regs:  Chapter 3 Section 13:  "...a dog that has been defeated in any regular or non regular class for single dog entries in its breed or variety at the show is ineligible to compete for Best of Breed or Variety."

I am asked this all the time as I do show secretary work regularly.

Thanks for the responses. I just went back to Section 3 myself again and re-read it, and it is as you say -- if the dog loses in Veterans, it cannot go into BOB. So she must choose which she wants to enter.

Sue is correct. Remember in Lancaster when the Winners Bitch was entered in Hunting Bitch (non-regular) class and was defeated - so could not go in the ring for Breed. Judge Burns did her the wonderful honor of allowing her a lap around by herself to recognize her wonderful accomplishment. With something like that would they still give out best of winners? Or did they?

Yep, as it was considered as a separate competition between the WD and WB.  Took a call to AKC to sort it out, as I understand.
(Never understood why the WB wasn't pulled from Hunting bitch after she took Winners, but not my dog..)

What would've happened if she didnt show her in the hunting bitch class and was marked absent technically she wouldn't have been defeated so could she have shown in bob then? Yes, Julie. They judged BOW after the Breed judging was completed. She WB was not eligible for BOB but was for BOW and won it

Yes, it would have lost the owner her entry fee, but at least not a chance to compete in breed. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Adam DeLude" To: Sent: Friday, April 04, 2008 9:28 AM Subject: Re: [gsp-l] Another Entry Question -- NSS > What would've happened if she didnt show her in the > hunting bitch class and was marked absent technically > she wouldn't have been defeated so could she have > shown in bob then ?

I think that might be incorrect.  I believe there is a rule that says that if a is dog entered and present at an event that it must compete unless excused by the judge, isn't there?  If the judge excused the dog from either class, then it could not compete in the BOB class.

I did not know this back in the day and entered open and field trial bitch. The judge determined that I had to compete in and win both classes to compete in the BOB class.  Won one and got second in the other, and could not compete further.

Too bad.  And really bad advice too...
Once a dog has entered the ring for a specific class, it has to continue to compete in the class, etc., but can be pulled from later classes, if double entered, not only in order to prevent something like this happening, but what if the dog becomes ill, hurts a foot, or something happens that it just can't be there later on....  That's always been the rule.

Oh well, at least she got BOW. (Did she not also receive an AOM ?)

What I have been told is that if you don't pick up the arm band then you don't have to show and say the dog is absent for that class.
Recently at a show a bitch finished one day then they pulled her for the next day but picked up the armband the day after and was ready to show standing by the ring, when she was told we didn't need her she left, no one questioned anything.

There is an AKC rule that a dog once it competes at a given show, must continue to compete in all class for which it is entered or becomes eligible.  I just had this happen to me not too long ago  and received a letter from AKC ;-).  If the bitch who won WB at NSS not shown up for Hunting bitch...her WB award would have been diallowed.  I don't think the owner would have wanted that!  The rule book is available online at AKC site.
