After a day in the field my girl has come down with a case of bumps. It almost looks like she has chicken pox. Alergic reaction to something I guess. I have given her Benadryl but it's not helping. We will be takeing her to the vet today, but if anyone has some insight as to what it may, be or how to fix that would be great. Thank you

Hi and welcome. Your dog is not conditioned to the environment. I would treat with peroxide,maybe some A&D ointment. You can buy protective vests in outdoor stores and hunting catalogs. Some dogs get "beat up" no matter how much they hunt - depends on the environment and the dog's hair quality. My dogs get beat up every so often - really can't be avoided.

She does wear a "skid plate" and has been in that area many times, but has never had this happen. I will give that a shot.

Could be something she ate as well. My brother had a lab that ate one of those black fuzzy catepillars and he got red whelps all over. The benadryl helped him though. Depending on how much your dog weighs you may not have given him enough benadryl. The formula most vets recommend is 1mg of benadryl for 1 lb in dog weight every eight hours. For my 50 lb and up shorthairs that is two benadryl. The other things it could be are bites (ants maybe or chiggers), sharp grass that has irritated the skin, etc.

Went to the vet yesterday and they say she may have been bit by something. They gave her a steriod shot, and said 2 benadryl a day. Should clear up in a few days. I guess my lab hunts alone this weekend. Thanks for the replys.

Glad to hear you figured it out. My dogs get 'bumpy' marks when they work a lot of thorny areas.
