well.. it's springtime in deltaville virginia, and the digging has begun!! moles, voles, other little creatures- all my hard yard work and some places look  like the surface of the moon!!! we run 3 miles a day, she swims in the chesapeake bay, has a 7 rear old "sister" my daughter janie to play with, and 2 soccer balls and 500 squeaky toys- but the SECOND she is left alone, she becomes an excavator- of the grave variety!!! maybe i should hire her out-  she's 18 months old and we love her dearly -  but some days i think my husband is going to lose it-patching holes!!! any ideas- i would love them! libby in deltaville va

I have tried lots of things and I settled for a small low fence (3 ft decorative garden fence) around the area of the backyard that is mine (it is not a big area either). The rest belongs to the dogs. I had to teach them that the fenced area was off limits, but for the most part they stay out of that area. I also provided a digging area for the dogs. A place that is easy for them to dig in. As for gardening and landscaping, the front yard is reserved for that. I even moved my small herb and vegetable garden to the front yard. I found it was easier to just accept that dogs love to dig, than it was to fight it. I also have 3 shorthairs and will be adding number four this year. Our compromise works pretty good. This probably isn't the answer you want to hear, but it is what worked for me.

By the way, you might want to post this under General Discussion as you are likely to get more answers there.
