My puppy received her Rabies shot at 4 months. About a month later, after taking her blood from noticing her stumbling, we found that her Platelets were at 40,000.

After testing for a million things...rat poison, tick, Von Wil. disease...the Vet told us that she had Thrombocytopenia (low platelets). She has been on Pred for about 3 three weeks and started Azith. last week. Her platelets are not yet up to where they need to be, but hoping next week will show some results.

After doing much research I have found that Immune Mediated diseases, such as Thrombocytopenia, can be an adverse reaction to Rabies vaccinations.

Does anyone have any expereince with this, or know of where I can go to find more answers. This has been a hellish three weeks. We love our little girl and just want her off this medication. She just hasn't been the same...

Volpi, My Mom has the opposite of this condition. She has Thrombocythemia, which is an excessive amount of platelets. The Drs think she acquired this as a result of Chemotherapy for her lung cancer from which she is now considered cured. She now takes a medication called; Hydrea. It's suppose to limit the amount of platelets made.
Has the Vet suggested a Platelet transfusion? This procedure is done on people, but I don't know if they have done it on dogs yet.
Has your pup had any Liver panels done? I would ask your Vet if he could do this testing. I know that in people Thrombocytopenia can be caused by some liver diseases. It's worth checking out.
In the mean time try to prevent her from bleeding, because with this condition, she doesn't have any way of clotting blood. Even the littlest scratch or cut can be fatal !!
I wish you the best of luck. Please keep us informed as to how she is doing Laura,Ruby, Sadie

I'm sorry to hear about that, I hope she gets better soon. I haven't heard of that, but you might get more of a response to your question in the general discussion forum, more people read & post there.

My GSP at age 4 months had an adverse reaction to a whole batch of vaccines. We don't know which one it was but suspect rabies or lepto, or maybe just general overload. But she reacted about two hours later (so neither immediate nor too much delayed). She was just really out of it, trembled a lot and threw up. Back to normal next day so a different situation.
