We have just adopted a cross breed german shorthaired pointer/ husky. She is a year and a half. She will be a house dog not a hunter. So I was wondering if we need to get her tail docked? It's pretty long, but I wouldn't want to put her in pain if we don't have too. I saw a couple postings about them breaking their tails and was heart broken. I wouldn't want that to happen to her

If anyone has advice, please let me know.

Being a mix and an intended Non hunter there would be no reason to dock the tail. I may be wrong but I have never heard of an adult having its tail docked. I don't think it would heal to look like it does on pups that are docked. Many GSPs and other pointer breeds often have full tails (I don't think docking happens much at all in Europe). Just think of it as a normal tail on any other dog. A friend of mine has a GSP/lab mix with a full tail.

Normally the puppies are docked no later than day 2 or 3. Adults can be docked successfully, but with adults it is actually an amputation. It will heal fine, but if you have no real reason to do it, I wouldn't recommend doing it as it is more complex and painful. If you do it at day 2 or 3 the tails are not fully developed and the nerves are not there yet either so it is not painful and heals quickly.

Welcome to the forum and just a suggestion, post in the general section and you will get more responses. We also love to see pictures of the dogs.
